There’s something special about stepping off the plane and immediately feeling the warmth of the sun and the salty ocean breeze. San Diego had been on my travel list for ages, and finally, I was here-ready to explore, relax, and make the most of this coastal paradise. Over the course of my trip, I found myself captivated by the stunning beaches, incredible food, and some unforgettable experiences on the water. Here’s a recap of the best moments from my San Diego getaway, along with some helpful travel tips to make your trip even better.

Sailing into Adventure: Whale Watching on the Pacific
One of the most anticipated parts of my trip was the whale-watching sail. There’s something surreal about being out on the open water, scanning the horizon for a glimpse of these magnificent creatures. We set sail from the harbor, the boat gliding effortlessly over the waves as the salty spray misted my face. The anticipation was electric- everyone on board peering eagerly at the water, cameras at the ready.
And then, we saw them. A pair of gray whales breached the surface, their massive bodies glistening under the California sun. The sight was breathtaking, almost otherworldly. The captain shared fascinating facts about their migration patterns, and we even saw a playful pod of dolphins trailing alongside our boat. It was an experience I’ll never forget, reminding me of the sheer beauty and wonder of the ocean.

Travel Tip: Book your whale-watching tour in advance, especially during peak migration seasons (December-April for gray whales). Dress in layers—it can get chilly on the water, even on sunny days!
Drinks and Lunch by the Water: A Perfect Afternoon
After the excitement of whale watching, I was more than ready to unwind with a good meal by the water. San Diego’s food scene is unbeatable, especially when it comes to fresh seafood and oceanfront dining. I found the perfect spot- a waterfront restaurant with panoramic views of the bay. The atmosphere was lively yet laid-back, the scent of salt and citrus filling the air as I settled into my seat.

I started with a crisp glass of white wine, the perfect pairing for the warm afternoon sun. For lunch, I couldn’t resist ordering the fish tacos, San Diego is famous for them, after all. They arrived perfectly plated, the grilled mahi-mahi nestled in soft corn tortillas, topped with crunchy cabbage, creamy sauce, and a hint of lime. Every bite was perfection, a balance of flavors that tasted like the essence of the California coast.
Later that evening, I explored San Diego’s bar scene, which is just as impressive as its food. I found a few fun spots with unique craft cocktails, one bar even served a drink that came in a smoke-filled glass dome, unveiling a rich, smoky aroma upon opening. I also went to a unique speakeasy that did not have a drink menu. Instead they asked what drinks you typically like and make you 3 cocktails based on your palate. I loved every drink and it was such a cool experience. Each bar had its own personality, making for an exciting night out.

Travel Tip: If you want a prime seat by the water, make a reservation, especially for sunset dining. Also, don’t be afraid to ask locals for their favorite seafood spots—sometimes the hidden gems are better than the tourist hotspots!
Taking the Ferry to Coronado: A Charming Escape
I had heard so much about Coronado Island, so I knew I had to make time to visit. Instead of driving, I opted for the ferry, a short yet scenic ride across the bay. As the boat pulled away from the dock, I marveled at the stunning views of San Diego’s skyline. The water shimmered under the afternoon sun, and the gentle rocking of the ferry made for a peaceful journey.
Stepping onto Coronado felt like entering a different world, charming, relaxed, and effortlessly beautiful. I wandered down Orange Avenue, admiring the boutique shops and cozy cafes. But the real highlight was the famous Hotel del Coronado, a historic beachfront resort that looked straight out of a postcard. The Victorian architecture, the palm trees swaying in the breeze, and the stretch of golden sand leading to the Pacific, it was a sight to behold.

I spent the afternoon strolling along the shore, letting the cool waves lap at my feet. The beach was pristine, the soft sand perfect for lounging. As I walked, I couldn’t help but envy the lucky locals who get to call this island home.
Travel Tip: The ferry runs regularly between downtown San Diego and Coronado, and it’s a great alternative to driving. Once on the island, consider renting a bike to explore—it’s the best way to see Coronado at your own pace.
The Magic of San Diego’s Sunsets
If there’s one thing that truly stole my heart in San Diego, it was the sunsets. Each evening, I made it a point to find the perfect vantage spot to watch the sky transform into a masterpiece of colors. The best one? Sunset Cliffs.

I arrived just as the sun began its descent, the sky shifting from deep blue to hues of orange, pink, and violet. The cliffs, rugged and dramatic, provided the perfect perch to take it all in. I found a quiet spot, sat down, and simply watched as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting its golden glow over the water. It was peaceful, mesmerizing, and almost meditative—a reminder of how small we are in the grand scheme of things, yet how connected we are to these moments of pure beauty.
Travel Tip: Sunset Cliffs can get crowded, so arrive early to secure a good spot. Bring a light jacket—it cools down quickly after sunset!
Meeting the La Jolla Seals: A Playful Encounter
On my last full day in San Diego, I made my way to La Jolla, a coastal gem known for its stunning shoreline and abundant marine life. As I walked along the waterfront, I could already hear them- the unmistakable barks of the seals lounging on the rocks at the Children’s Pool.

Seeing them up close was an absolute delight. Some were sprawled out, basking in the sun, while others flopped their way into the waves, disappearing beneath the surf before popping up again with an almost mischievous look. The little ones were the most playful, splashing around as if they didn’t have a care in the world.
Travel Tip: Visit in the morning for fewer crowds and better lighting for photos. Be respectful of the seals’ space—give them plenty of room and observe from a distance.
Final Thoughts: Why San Diego Stole My Heart
As I packed up my suitcase and prepared to head home, I couldn’t help but reflect on what an incredible trip it had been. San Diego is a city that has it all, adventure, relaxation, incredible food, and natural beauty at every turn. From the thrill of whale watching to the serenity of a sunset over the ocean, every experience felt like a gift.
Of course, no visit to San Diego would be complete without indulging in the local Mexican food. I made sure to get a burrito, because San Diego is known for having some of the best Mexican cuisine in the country. Every bite was packed with bold flavors, making it one of my favorite meals of the trip.

This trip was more than just a getaway; it was a reminder of why I love to travel. And as my plane took off, I knew one thing for certain…I’d be back.
Final Travel Tip: Plan your itinerary, but leave room for spontaneity. Some of the best moments in San Diego happen when you go with the flow.
Until next time, San Diego.
