The Best Beaches in Koh Samui

Chaweng Beach is where the island’s pulse beats the strongest. The powdery white sand stretches for miles, bordered by swaying palm trees and the inviting turquoise sea. Here, I spent my mornings basking in the sun and my evenings sipping cocktails at beachfront bars while enjoying live music. It’s a hub of activity, with jet skis, parasailing, and beach volleyball keeping the energy high.
If you love nightlife, Chaweng also has some of the best beach clubs and rooftop bars on the island. Ark Bar and The Green Mango Club are perfect spots for dancing under the stars. The lively atmosphere makes Chaweng ideal for those who want a mix of relaxation and entertainment.
Lamai Beach: A Quieter Escape
Just south of Chaweng, Lamai Beach offers a more relaxed vibe. I found myself wandering along the shore at sunrise, watching local fishermen cast their nets into the calm waters. The beach is lined with boutique resorts and charming beachside cafes, making it the perfect spot to unwind.
One of the highlights here is the Hin Ta and Hin Yai rock formations, also known as the Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks. Shaped by nature over centuries, these unique rock formations resemble male and female anatomy and have become a popular photo spot.
Silver Beach: A Hidden Gem
If you prefer something more secluded, Silver Beach is a slice of heaven. Tucked away between Chaweng and Lamai, this small cove boasts crystal-clear waters and soft sand. I snorkeled here one afternoon and was mesmerized by the vibrant marine life just a few meters from the shore.
I recommend arriving early in the morning to enjoy the beach before it gets crowded. There are a few small beachfront restaurants where you can grab fresh coconut water and enjoy the stunning view.
Maenam Beach: A Romantic Retreat
For those seeking tranquility, Maenam Beach is the place to be. With fewer crowds, it’s an ideal spot for a romantic stroll at sunset. The beach overlooks Koh Phangan, and the gentle waves make it perfect for paddleboarding. I stayed in a beachfront bungalow here, falling asleep to the soothing sounds of the ocean each night.
Another great experience in Maenam is the weekly Walking Street Market, held every Thursday. It’s a fantastic place to sample local Thai food, shop for souvenirs, and enjoy live music performances.
Island-Hopping and Snorkeling Adventures
A Snorkeling Excursion to Koh Tao
One of the highlights of my trip was a snorkeling day trip to Koh Tao, a smaller island renowned for its incredible underwater world. We set off early in the morning, sailing across the shimmering waters to reach this diver’s paradise.
Upon arrival, I slipped into my snorkeling gear and dove into the warm, clear waters. The coral reefs were teeming with life, schools of colorful fish darted between the coral formations, while sea turtles gracefully glided past. Shark Bay was particularly unforgettable; the sight of harmless blacktip reef sharks swimming below.
After snorkeling, we enjoyed a seafood lunch on the shore before venturing to Koh Nang Yuan, a postcard-perfect island known for its sandbar that connects three tiny islets. The view from the island’s viewpoint was nothing short of breathtaking, with shades of blue stretching as far as the eye could see.
If you have time, consider staying overnight in Koh Tao. The island is also a world-class diving destination, and many travelers take diving courses here to explore the deeper parts of the ocean.
Exciting Excursions on Koh Samui
Ang Thong National Marine Park: A Kayaker’s Dream
A trip to Koh Samui wouldn’t be complete without exploring Ang Thong National Marine Park. This archipelago of 42 islands is a paradise of limestone cliffs, hidden lagoons, and lush jungles.
I joined a guided tour and spent the day kayaking through sea caves and snorkeling in secluded bays. One of the highlights was climbing to the viewpoint of Koh Wua Talap, which offered a panoramic view of the entire marine park. The hike was challenging but absolutely worth it.
Big Buddha and Wat Plai Laem: Cultural Wonders
For a cultural experience, I visited the iconic Big Buddha temple. The 12-meter golden statue is a must-see, and the atmosphere around it is peaceful and spiritual. Not far from there, Wat Plai Laem dazzled me with its intricate Chinese-influenced architecture and serene lotus ponds.

Reaching this spot involved a bumpy ride through the jungle, but the serenity of the garden made it all worthwhile.
Sunset at the Jungle Club
One of my favorite memories of Koh Samui was watching the sunset from the Jungle Club. Perched on a hillside, this rustic-chic resort offers an unparalleled view of the coastline. I sipped on a refreshing coconut while the sky transformed into shades of pink and orange, a moment of pure bliss.
If you want a more luxurious setting, other fantastic sunset spots include the Intercontinental’s Air Bar and Nikki Beach.
Where to Eat and Drink
Fisherman’s Village: A Culinary Haven
Located in Bophut, Fisherman’s Village is a charming area filled with beachfront restaurants, lively bars, and boutique shops. I indulged in fresh seafood at Coco Tam’s, where the tables are set directly on the sand. Their grilled prawns and Thai-style mango sticky rice were unforgettable.
Jahn: A Luxurious Dining Experience
For a more upscale dining experience, I treated myself to a meal at Jahn, an elegant restaurant overlooking the sea. The traditional Thai dishes here are prepared with a modern twist, and each bite was an explosion of flavors.
Night Markets: A Street Food Adventure
Exploring the night markets was another highlight of my trip. The Chaweng Night Market had an array of delicious street food, from spicy papaya salad to sizzling satay skewers. I couldn’t resist trying a fresh coconut ice cream served in a coconut shell!
