6 Tips for How to Pack Like a Pro: The Ultimate Carry-On Guide

I used to be the person at the airport wrestling with an overstuffed suitcase, praying it would fit in the overhead bin. Sound familiar? After years of traveling, sometimes for weeks with just a carry-on, I’ve finally cracked the code on packing light without sacrificing what I need.

Packing efficiently isn’t just about cramming everything into a tiny suitcase. It’s about strategy, knowing what works (and what doesn’t), and making the most of every inch of space. So, if you’re tired of paying for checked bags, waiting at baggage claim, or hauling around a suitcase that weighs more than you do, this guide is for you.

Let’s dive into exactly how to pack like a pro with just a carry-on.

Step 1: Choose the Right Carry-On Bag

Not all carry-ons are created equal. If you want to maximize space and make your life easier, here’s what to look for:

Size Matters – Most airlines allow a carry-on that’s around 22″ x 14″ x 9″. Some budget airlines have stricter rules, so check your airline’s website before packing. I always go for a hard-shell suitcase because it keeps everything compact and protects my stuff.

Expandable or Not? – Expandable suitcases are great if you don’t overstuff them (otherwise, they might not fit in the overhead bin). If I know I’ll be bringing back souvenirs, I take an expandable one but keep it zipped down on the way there.

Backpack or Roller Bag? – If you prefer hands-free travel, a travel backpack can be a game-changer. I love using my Travel backpack for short trips, it fits under the seat and forces me to pack light. Its like having an extra luggage in backpack form. Get my favorite travel backpack: HERE

Built-In Organization – A suitcase with built-in dividers, compression straps, or extra pockets makes life so much easier. If yours doesn’t have them, don’t worry, packing cubes (which I’ll get to in a sec) will fix that.

Step 2: Plan Your Outfits (No, Really, Plan Them)

Raise your hand if you’ve ever packed a ton of clothes and still felt like you had nothing to wear. That was me, until I learned the magic of outfit planning.

Here’s my simple formula:

  • Stick to a color palette (neutrals + one accent color) so everything matches.
  • Choose versatile pieces you can dress up or down. A simple black dress? Perfect for a fancy dinner or a casual sightseeing day.
  • Layers are key – A lightweight jacket, a cozy sweater, and a few mix-and-match tops will take you far.

Example Packing List for a 5-7 Day Trip:

✔️ 2-3 tops (neutral colors)
✔️ 2 bottoms (jeans + comfy joggers)
✔️ 1 dress (if needed)
✔️ 1 lightweight jacket or sweater
✔️ 1 pair of sneakers + 1 pair of flats/sandals
✔️ Minimal accessories (scarf, small crossbody bag)
✔️ 5-7 pairs of underwear + socks

Pro Tip: Wear your bulkiest items on the plane (like sneakers and a jacket) to free up suitcase space.

Step 3: Master the Packing Cubes & Rolling Technique

If you haven’t discovered packing cubes, prepare for your life to change. These little fabric organizers keep your suitcase neat, prevent overpacking, and make unpacking so easy.

How to Use Packing Cubes Like a Pro:

  • Separate by category – One for tops, one for bottoms, one for undergarments.
  • Compression cubes – These save even more space. I use these for bulkier items like sweaters. Check out the compression cubes I use: HERE
  • See-through or labeled cubes – Helps you grab what you need without digging.

And let’s talk about rolling vs. folding.

  • Rolling saves space and prevents wrinkles. I roll most of my clothes, especially T-shirts, leggings, and lightweight dresses.
  • Folding is better for structured items like blazers or jeans.

Bonus Hack: Use empty spaces like inside your shoes (great for socks, chargers, or a small toiletry bag).

Step 4: Pack a TSA-Friendly Toiletry Kit

Ever had TSA confiscate your expensive moisturizer? Yeah, me too. The 3-1-1 rule means liquids must be in containers 3.4 ounces or smaller, all fitting into one quart-sized bag. Investing in a simple TSA approved travel set can make life much easier. Just refill the bottles and keep them in a clear packing cube. Get my favorite travel set: HERE.

Here’s my go-to toiletry packing list:

✔️ Travel-size shampoo & conditioner
✔️ Toothbrush + mini toothpaste
✔️ Facial cleanser + moisturizer
✔️ Sunscreen (non-negotiable!)
✔️ Minimal makeup (tinted moisturizer, mascara, lip balm)
✔️ Deodorant
✔️ Razor
✔️ Dry shampoo (lifesaver for long trips!)

I love solid toiletries (like bar soap, shampoo bars, and stick deodorant) because they don’t count as liquids and save space.

Step 5: Pack Smart for Security & In-Flight Comfort

Getting through TSA quickly = less stress. Here’s how I make it painless:

Keep your liquids & electronics handy – I pack my toiletry bag and laptop in an easy-to-grab spot so I don’t have to dig through my suitcase.

Wear easy-off shoes – Trust me, you don’t want to be that person holding up the line while untying boots.

Bring a reusable water bottle – Empty it before security, then fill it up at a water fountain after. Saves money and keeps you hydrated.

Have a “flight essentials” pouch – Mine includes:

Step 6: Final Pre-Trip Check & Last-Minute Packing Hacks

Before I head to the airport, I do a final check to make sure I haven’t forgotten anything important.

✔️ Passport/ID (obviously)
✔️ Phone charger & portable battery
✔️ Travel insurance info (if needed)
✔️ Download offline maps & boarding pass
✔️ Small stash of cash (just in case)

Last-Minute Hacks That Have Saved Me:

  • Leave some space in your suitcase – You’ll probably pick up souvenirs or extra snacks.
  • Use a digital packing list – I swear by the PackPoint app-it customizes lists based on your destination and weather.
  • Check the weather one last time – No one wants to be surprised by unexpected rain or a heatwave.

Packing Light = More Freedom

Traveling with just a carry-on has changed the way I explore. No more lost luggage, no extra fees, no waiting around at baggage claim, just grab your bag and go.

If you’ve ever struggled with overpacking, trust me, it gets easier with practice. Start small, experiment with different packing techniques, and before you know it, you’ll be packing like a pro.
